Delaware Speaker of the House Terry Spence is now the head of one of the most prestigious legislative organizations in the country. At its recent annual meeting in Birmingham, Alabama, the National Speakers Conference unanimously elected Terry Spence as its new president.

The National Speakers Conference was established 19 years ago to serve as a forum for America's Speakers of the House to discuss issues of mutual interest, share information and promote good government. The NSC operates under the umbrella of the State Legislative Leaders Foundation, a nonprofit, nonpartisan research and education organization established in 1972.

"I’m honored to have been chosen by my peers to lead this organization, which I consider to be one of the finest legislative groups in the country,” Speaker Spence said.

Terry Spence has served as Delaware’s Speaker of the House since 1987 – the lengthiest tenure of any Speaker in Delaware history. He is also currently the longest-serving Speaker of the House, at either the state or federal level, in the nation.

"Speaker Spence is recognized as one of the finest presiding officers in the country,” said Stephen Lakis, president of the State Legislative Leaders Foundation. “His public policy experience, his commitment to bipartisanship and his strong belief in protecting the role of the state legislatures are precisely the qualities the National Speakers Conference needs in its leadership. I believe our organization will benefit from his guidance."

As NSC president, Speaker Spence will be charged with hosting next year's annual meeting in Delaware. “That meeting will take place in Dover next September (2007), but it’ll include events in all three counties,” Speaker Spence said. “Not only will it generate thousands of dollars in economic activity in Delaware, it’ll also be a chance to showcase our state to some of the most influential leaders in the country.”
